How Much Does Tree Removal Cost in Australia?
Tree removal is priced per tree, and size is the biggest driver. Published Australian cost guides put a small tree under 5 metres at roughly $250 to $900, a medium 5–10 metre tree at $650 to $2,500, and a large 10–20 metre tree anywhere from $1,500 to $6,000. Very large trees over 20 metres are specialist jobs that commonly start around $4,000 and can run well past $15,000 when cranes and traffic control are involved.
Stump grinding is usually quoted separately: a typical 30–60 cm stump runs about $150 to $450, with per-centimetre rates around $3 to $4.50 of trunk diameter, and most operators apply a minimum call-out. Palm removal ranges from about $150 for a small golden cane to $2,500 for tall cocos or date palms, and hedge trimming jobs commonly land between $80 and $700 depending on size and how overgrown the hedge is.
Access is the quiet price-setter. A tree in an open front yard can be dropped and chipped quickly, while the same tree behind a house with no drop zone must come down in small pieces, commonly adding 50 to 100 per cent. Work near powerlines, emergency call-outs and green waste haulage all add further, and a consulting arborist report for a council application typically costs $300 to $700.
Use the estimate above as a starting point, then get written quotes from a few local tree services so you can compare inclusions like stump grinding, green waste removal and clean-up. Prices vary by species, site and location, so a firm written quote is always the reliable number.
